After many failed attempts, I was finally able to watch the 5 Photo Stories on my husband's laptop. What do I think?
I think the use of the first three photo stories shows a great deal of flexibility on the teacher(s) that created these assignments. The fact of the matter is that our students are technology babies and we have to adjust our ways of thinking to keep up with their way of thinking! What could have been really boring assignments (typically done on poster board) became assignments that took students from basic knowledge to evaluating using their new found knowledge (Bloom's).
I really enjoyed the video with the young lady analyzing several advertisements. I could tell that she really understood the assignment and actually applied it to this particular assignment. Most advertisements bank on the fact that young people don't think for themselves and she is now very aware of that strategy.
The personal story and Social Studies stories were very different, but both invoked a sense of emotion using background music to facilitate those emotions. I have taught about child labor laws (5th grade) and this photo story would have made a fabulous activating strategy. The personal story was funny although it didn't flow that well.
